Archaeology Notes

NS91SE 28 95200 12930.

A farmstead, comprising three roofed buildings, one unroofed building of three compartments and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1863, sheet L). Three roofed buildings, one partially roofed building and four enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK), 19 September 2000.

The name of the farm of Watermeetings can be traced back to 1663 in the RGSS; prior to that a place name of Potrail is given. The earliest version is 'Poltrayle' in 1384.

Recorded in draft of forthcoming report, History of the Daer Valley, South Lanarkshire.

Biggar Museum Trust, T Ward 2002; NMRS MS 1774, 21.

This mid-19th-century farmstead comprises two ranges to the SW of a farmhouse. That nearest the farmhouse has a U-shaped plan and contains a byre, stables and a cart bay. The other range was probably a sheep byre with fanks to the rear of it. There is also a detached Dutch barn. The farmstead is built of rubble, which has been white-washed, and has slate roofs. When visited in 2000 it was intact but in poor condition.

Information from RCAHMS (SS), 15 March 2006.
