(NJ 6968 0238) Site of Battle (NAT) AD 1562

OS 6" map, (1959)

In 1562, when Mary, Queen of Scots, accompanied by Lord James Stewart and a suitable escort, was visiting the north-east, Gordon, Earl of Huntly, gathered the Gordon clan together and stationed his force at Corrichie, below the Hill of Fare, to await the royal party. The latter, forewarned, were joined by seven or eight hundred Forbes's and Leslies, and were able to defeat the Gordons, killing a considerable number, including the Earl of Huntly.

A stone was erected in 1951 to mark the site of the battle (Anon 1953), which took place on the 5th November 1562 (Dawson nd).

M Brander 1975; L H Dawson nd.; Anon 1953.

This battle site is situated on a gentle SE-facing slope at an altitude of about 255m OD.

The commemorative stone (NJ70SW 7) is at NJ 7325 0140.

NMRS, MS/712/55.
