Archaeology Notes

NT43NE 126 from 49480 36168 to NT 49541 36168

The original metal girder bridge which spanned the railway at the site of Galashiels Station (NT43NE 100.21) has been demolished and replaced by a concrete bridge with a smaller span. The bridge has been constructed to accommodate the rebuilding of the Waverley Line (RLY 4) due to be completed by 2012.

The surrounding area has been completely re-modelled and no trace survives of any of the buildings which once stood to the SW of the station. A new car park and roads are now in place.

Activities

Project (April 2009 - February 2015)

The Borders Railway Project proposals are to reinstate the Newcraighall to Tweedbank section of the former Waverley Line. The reinstated railway line will be approximately 48km long and the majority of the route will use the existing railway embankment.

Several field surveys, archaeological evaluations and standing building surveys were undertaken by CFA Archaeology from April 2009 until February 2015.
