Archaeology Notes

NJ56SW 3 c. 50 61

Gordon, writing in 1726, described a hoard of Roman coins of which 27 were preserved by the Earl of Findlater, found in the Boyne. The coins included those of Antoninus Pius, Faustina, Otho, and others. This is probably the hoard described by Chalmers (1887-94) as having been found near the old bridge a little below the tower of Deskford; and despite the gap of some 80 years between the two reports, Sir George Macdonald (1918) regarded the two finds as being one and the same.

O G S Crawford 1949; G Chalmers 1887-94; A Gordon 1726; G Macdonald 1918.
