Archaeology Notes

NO07NW 5 centred on 0091 7996

'Falar Lodge' is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet vi) as three roofed buildings.

Information from RCAHMS (GJW) 7 February 2001.

Awaiting DES 2000 entry (2000/037).

NO 0091 7996 Situated in a sheltered position beside the Allt Feith Lair lies Fealar Lodge and associated buildings. A survey has yet to be carried out but the Lodge covers an area of some 30.0m x 19.5m. The house is partly rendered and has a slate roof. The internal walls are in the main either pannelled or covered by plasterboard. The stables have cobbled floors and wooden stalls, both probably original. A number of turf dykes surviving up to 2.0m wide and 0.3m high lie both to the south and to the north of the Lodge and may represent former sheep fanks. There are signs of quarrying - probably for track maintenance - close to the house and later enclosures may have destroyed traces of earlier turf dykes.

The house and one ancillary building to the east are marked on William Roy's map (1747-1755) as "Fentry Shield". James Stobie (1783) marks the building with a mansion symbol. Several alterations were made between 1860 when the 1st edition O/S 6" was surveyed and 1898 when the revised edition was issued. The unroofed building on the 1st edition is currently the dog kennel. The "shealling of Fealar" of 1680 is one of the earliest references (Kerr, this audit). It is hoped to carry out a detailed survey in the future.

Judith Harris 1999.
