Two large cairns which have never been opened.
Name Book 1867.
Cairns of Erith (NR)
OS 6" map, (1959)
The smaller of the two cairns, at NJ 5659 4957, is now reduced to a conical turf-covered mound, 1.2m high and 6.0m diameter. The larger cairn, at NJ 5667 4971, is about 1.2m high and 11.5m diameter. In the centre are the remains of a lozenge-shaped chamber, built of rough, dry-stone walling, standing c.1.0m high inside and c.0.2m above the general level of the cairn outside.
No confirmation of either name could be obtained.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (JTT) 16 September 1964.
The cairns are as described by Todd, except that the 'lozenge-shaped chamber' in the N cairn is modern, probably a crude shooting butt built from cairn material. Neither of the proper names are still known locally. The name 'Erith' is probably a misreading of the name 'Geith' in Old English script.
Visited by OS (NKB) 19 January 1968.
