Activities

Standing Building Recording (28 January 2016)

NM 90363 80919 (NM98SW 17) A Level 1 building survey was carried out, 28 January 2016, of a disused building prior to its conversion to a house. The building, known locally as The Castle or The Armoury, lay across the Fort William – Mallaig road from a church (designed by EW Pugin in 1873)

and between a church school and chapel house (presbytery). The building was a two-storey, rubble-wall construction, with either end of the upper-storey featuring a fireplace and the lower floor apparently given over to storage. A corrugated iron roof may have replaced an original, possibly slate-covered. Cartographic evidence supported by details of building fabric and style, suggested a later 19th-century date and a possible

association with the church.
