Archaeology Notes

NJ53NW 2 c.5417 3985.

(Name: NJ 5417 3985) Battle Hill. Supposed site of Conflict between the Clans Gordon and Cummin (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1938)

"Battle Hill" is supposed to have derived its name from a skirmish about the fourteenth century between the Gordons and the Comyns, either on the hill or between it and Huntly Castle (NJ54NW 5).

"There is no record of this battle in history and it is not unlikely that it may have had its origin from the Battle of Slioch (AD 1307 - NJ53NE 9) which was fought within half a mile of it."

Name Book 1871; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The site of this supposed conflict was not established during the course of field investigation; the area in which it allegedly took place is afforested.

Visited by OS (EGC) 20 September 1961.
