(NJ 5496 3936) Torra Duncan (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

'Tary Duncan' a tumulus on the farm of Cairnhill is believed to have been raised by Bruce's army as a 'post of communication'. It has not been opened but ploughing suggests that the mound is artificial. Excepting about four inches of black mould in the surface the soil beneath appears quite soft and without any stones.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The mound is situated in a low-lying cultivated field. It is not quite circular in shape, measuring 42.0m east-west, and 39.0m north-south.

The fairly flat top measures 9.0m east-west and 11.0m north-south The mound, which reaches a maximum height of 3.6m, has had crops growing on it.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (EGC) 20 September 1961.

This mound is of morainic origin, confirmed by its situation in a 'basin' and its composition. It is certainly not a 'signal-post'.

Visited by OS (JLD) 29 September 1961.

Bones, not certainly human, were found when the mound was ploughed 'some years ago'.

Information from Mr H Grierson (farmer), Cairnhill, Huntly to OS, 23 February 1967.
