(NJ 5795 2308) Cairn (NR).

OS 6" map, (1959)

An unopened cairn about 70 feet in diameter and 6 feet high.

Name Book 1866.

A cairn of bare rubble stones, 15.0m in diameter and c.1.7m high, situated on the summit of Knock Saul. It is now mutilated by the construction of crude shelters.

Re-surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 15 September 1967.

This cairn is situated at an altitude of 412m OD, astride the boundary between the parishes of Leslie (Gordon) and Tullynessle and Forbes.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 23 July 1999.

NMRS, MS/712/53.

[Name amended from Knock Soul to Knock Saul]. The cairn on the summit of Knock Saul measures about 12m in diameter by 1m in height, but several pens or huts have been constructed from the cairn material, which has been spread onto the surrounding heather moorland.

A boundary stone is situated immediately SE of the cairn. Rectangular in section and round-headed in the profile of its faces, it measures 0.32m in breadth by 0.15m in thickness and 0.9m in height. On its N face it bears an incised letter J, and on the S the letter W; both letters are underlined with a shape that resembles a broad, shallow U. A bench-mark is cut into the rounded top of the stone.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 24 June 1999.
