A GL (gun-laying) radar site with radar ramp has been identified from RAF WWII vertical air photographs (106G L/NLA 96, 20.03.1945, 4012-15) situated at the N end of Golf Road. Visible on the photographs is the octagonal pattern of the GL-mat and the centrally positioned radar ramp for the mobile unit. Two cable trenches are also visible, and the presence of the heavy anti-aircraft battery (NJ90NE 66) and 'Z' battery (NJ90NE 68) on and near the esplanade to the SE would suggest that this radar unit was constructed to assist in the calculation for height and distance range-finding for the high-angle guns and rockets. The site was built post May 1942, as an oblique air phtotograph of the same area (RAF No.1 CAM unit, no.AF 860, 09.05.1942) shows only two rows anti-glider trenches at this location. The anti-glider trenches can be seen on the later photographs but overlain by the radar site.
Information from RCAHMS (DE), December 2000
The GL radar was attached to the 'Z' battery (NJ90NE 68) and was a GL MkII version.
