This facility was commissioned in 1971 and it formed part of the general conversion from coal gas to natural gas, initially decided in 1966, which formed part of the quest for cheaper gas. This Liquefied Natural Gas Facility was the first of its kind in Britain and was part of a programme for LNG storage. This allowed the supply of small satellite LNG Stations by tankers from Glenmavis and the closing down of small isolated carbonising plants.
(For details on the facility itself, see A B Garbutt, E G Graham and L Thompson, 1972).
