Archaeology Notes

NJ62SW 161 6013 2450

Nothing is now visible of two buildings and three small enclosures which are depicted on a late18th-century farm plan of the Mains of Leslie (SRO: RHP 5199/4) on the left (W) bank of the White Burn, about 160m S of Mains Leslie farmsteading (NJ62SW 103). The buildings and enclosures were situated between the burn and an area of cultivated ground, the main part of which was a field of 4 acres (c.1.6ha) called Mains Croft. Whilst it is possible that the Mains Croft was once a separate holding, by this time the field was a part of the infield of Leslie Mains and it is not listed on the map as a sublet.

Neither the buildings nor the enclosures and the earlier field boundaries are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet xliv), and they had presumably been removed by 1870.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 26 May 1999.
