Archaeology Notes

NJ62SW 160 6017 2450

Nothing is now visible of what were probably four cottages and a garden, which are depicted on the right (E) bank of the White Burn, about 160m S of Mains Leslie farmsteading (NJ62SW 103), on a late 18th-century farm plan of the Mains of Leslie (SRO: RHP 5199/4). They stood to the W of a 6? acre (c.2.6ha) cultivated field called Cottertown Crofts. At this time the field was part of the infield of Leslie Mains, but its name suggests that the field was formerly the cultivated ground of the cottars of Mains of Leslie; the buildings were presumably cottages occupied by the farmworkers.

The cottages appear to have been removed before 1870, as neither they nor the garden enclosure and the earlier field boundaries are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet xliv).
