(NJ 4488 5911) King's Cairn {NR} (remains of) {NAT}

OS 1:10000 map, 1982

A small mound of stones originally much larger but partly removed for building purposes; traditionally marking the grave of the mythical King Indulphus (but see also NT46NE 4 - 'King's Cairn').

Name Book 1867.

All that remains of King's Cairn is an amorphous turf-covered mound situated on gently sloping ground adjacent to a sunken track. It has been severely mutilated by quarrying, revealing a content mainly of rubble stones, with some large boulders lying loose on the surface and showing evidence of blasting. Unable to classify but undoubtedly artificial.

Name, but not tradition, known locally.

Re-surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 4 July 1967.

An unimpressive flat-topped mound, 0.4m high, measuring an estimated 8.0m N-S by transversely, but this latter dimension clearly curtailed by a ploughed field on the west and by the sunken track on the east. Other aspects as detailed in previous field report.

Surveyed at 1/10,000

Visited by OS (NKB) 25 April 1978.
