Archaeology Notes

NJ62SW 89 6045 2209

This long range has been reduced to a pile of rubble in a cultivated field 240m WSW of Southbogs cottage (NJ62SW 88). It is depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet liii) and probably contained a cottage with an outshot at its SW end and a garden on the SE side. The range was still roofed at the end of the 19th century (OS 6-inch map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd edition, 1901, sheet liii.NW).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 26 May 1999.

(Location cited as NJ 6045 2211). Southbogs: the 1st edition of the OS map depicts a small farmstead and enclosure on a moderate slope at an altitude of 240m OD. The footings of an L-shaped building are visible on a vertical air photograph (BKS NJ62S 2731031, flown 7 July 1977).

NMRS, MS/712/103.
