Archaeology Notes

NJ44NW 3 c. 414 491

(Area NJ 414 491) A hoard of 80 to 100 silver coins was discovered on Cauldhame farm a few yards from the old cliff of the Isla and a little east of Douglas-brae old lime quarry. About 30 coins were recovered of which 2 were of William the Lion, the remainder of Henry II. Three coins were presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS].

E Burns 1882; G Gordon 1882.

Douglas-brae is at NJ 412 490. No local knowledge of the find, nor of the "old cliff of the Isla", but this latter has presumably been incorporated in the quarry workings, as there is no sign of a cliff elsewhere in the area.

Visited by OS (AA), 3 July 1967.
