Former Glasgow University Sports Pavilion, Kingfisher Gardens, 1936, Thomas Harold Hughes

The leading modernist sports pavilion in Scotland. Art Deco with classical touches, in white-rendered brick. Long main front, with metal windows and horizontal glazing bars to original changing rooms. Projecting glazed central entrance with square stairturret leading to semicircular balcony over tearoom. Hughes was briefly a partner of Burnet Tait & Lorne before taking up an appointment as Professor of Architecture at Glasgow University, where he was considered an outstanding teacher. Smartly refurbished and converted to residential use, 1990s.

Taken from "Greater Glasgow: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Sam Small, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
