Knowes of Cott (NR)

OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1903).

In 1928 two insignificant mounds were identified. The larger, which had been dug into, was possibly about 60 ft. in diameter: the other , only possibly artificial, lay a few yards to the N.,was about 1 ft. high and may have been about 20 ft. in diameter. There may have been at least three mounds here.

Classified under 'Cairns, Cists etc.' Only two mounds 'apparently Tumuli', were noted in 1880 and no information about them was obtainable locally.

Name Book 1880; RCAHMS 1946.

These mounds now appear as slight rises at HY 2520 1347 on a hilltop. They were levelled by Mr. J. Chalmers, who stated that they were earthen and contained no burnt material. No finds have been made.

Information from Mr J Chalmers, Lee, Stromness Parish, Orkney; visited by OS (NKB) 15 September 1964.
