(NJ 4587 1483) Cairn Ficklie (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1902)

A cairn, c.22 yards in diameter and 8 feet high and apparently unexcavated in 1866 (Name Book 1866). Described by Simpson as 'the immense Cairn Fichlie' and opened c. 1880 (W D Simpson 1943). It now consists of a large ciruclar 'rickle' of stones about 50 feet in internal diameter. Originally it was conical and 95 yards in circumference. Nothing is known to have been discovered except a few flint arrowheads. This cairn and Cairn Ley (NJ41SE 3) were once said to be the survivors of a large number of cairns which formerly existed on the hill. In 1725 "many graves and heaps of stones" were mentioned here.

Name Book 1866; W D Simpson 1943.

Cairn Fichlie remains as a circular hollowed heap of stones c. 23.0 metres diameter, c. 2.5 metres high. No trace of any other cairns.

Visited by OS (R L) 29 August 1968.

Activities

Field Visit (27 November 2002)

This cairn is situated on the summit of a broad ridge about 900m N of Fichlie farmsteading (NJ41SE 34). It comprises a large mass of loose stones and boulders, and measures 24m in diameter by about 2.5m in height. A large area at the centre of the cairn has been removed to a depth of about 1.5m, the result of an excavation about 1880, but the present whereabouts of the 'few' flint arrowheads that were found at that time are not known.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 27 November 2002.
