Archaeology Notes

NJ40SW 11 424 016.

A mound at the eastern foot of Culblean Hill (NJ 4243 0162) has a 30-foot saucer-shaped depression in its top (an early-excavated cairn?). Southeastward from it is a 36-foot circle of stones (NJ 4246 0158). Over this part of the moor and hill are many bowl-shaped pits, 7 - 8 feet in diameter and up to 2 feet deep, which seem to be artificial.

A Ogston 1931.

There is no trace of the aforementioned mound or circle of stones on a rock-strewn hillside, containing numerous natural hillocks, and fortuitous arrangements of boulders apparently forming circles or part-circles. The bowl-shaped depressions occur in large quantities over the whole area, and are most likely a result of quarrying, erosion or tree uprooting.

Visited by OS (N K B) 23 February 1967.
