(NJ 4698 0054) Mulloch Cairn (NR)

OS 6"map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1901)

Mulloch Cairn, on the summit of Mullock Hill, is 60ft in diameter and 5ft high, built of granite stones from the locality.

Michie says that there are no upright stones in position but the foundations of what was probably a hill fort can easily be traced. (He is probably referring to a kerb or similar structure of the cairn itself).

Traditionally the grave of a Danish chief.

J G Michie 1910; A Ogston 1931; Name Book 1865; New Statistical Account (NSA, written by Rev M Miller - 1842) 1845.

Mullock Cairn, the remains of a cairn spread to c.15. 0m diameter and c.1.4m high, with modern marker cairns on its top, built from the cairn material. No kerb chamber or other cairn-like features visible.

Visited by OS (R L) 16 October 1968.
