(NJ 4567 0423) Stone Circle (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6"map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1902)

An isolated "ring" of small stones heaped up in the usual fashion, measuringg 60 feet across.

A Ogston 1931.

This is a well defined mound of earth and small stones, 18.0m diameter, 2 1/2ft high. The stones are rather small, the largest being about 18ins high. The mound slopes slightly downwards towards its centre from its northern edge, where there is a cairn of very small stones. It is approx. 11.0m diameter by 1ft high. The whole feature appears to be more resembling a cairn circle than a stone circle.

Visited by OS (RDA) 12 August 1955.

This feature, situated in a gently sloping field is a circular mound c.21.0m in diameter and about 1.0m high, slightly hollowed on top. It is overgrown with whin and the centre has been obscured by field clearance. Although several large boulders protrude around the edge, only three, in the southern arc, are earthfast and possibly original.

It is not a stone circle, but it may be the remains of a cairn, although the presence of about a dozen stone clearance heaps about 70.0m to the N suggest that it could equally well be the remains of an associateed enclosure.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (AA) 19 November 1968.
