One unroofed building annotated 'Waulk Mill (Ruin)' is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ayrshire 1858, sheet vii), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1980).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 7 April 2000

Activities

Field Visit (16 July 2010 - 16 July 2010)

Walked over site and took photographs.

Srp Note (18 April 2012)

Survey undertaken 16th July 2010.

A grassy/stone rubble mound delineates the rectangular form of the mill.

A maturing sycamore tree, along with scrub growth, fills one area of what was the interior of the building.

Further upstream there is an copse of small deciduous trees. Included in this mixture are alders which indicates the wet areas of the copse. It is difficult to determine any definite line of a lade albeit there are several shallow linear areas. Standing water was evident in many areas. This may indicate that, as well as the area of the lade, some water may have been held here for use in the waulking process.

Fairly recent river bed clearing operations have resulted in banks being reinforced with stone from the river. If any of the dam/lade access remained before these operations there is no evidence now.
