Archaeology Notes

NJ40NE 8 c. 48 06.

There were 'numerous cairns of various sizes, all surrounded by one, and sometimes two concentric circles of stones, which projected a little above the surface' on or around a rounded spur called the Doune, to the west of Knowhead (now the Alamein Training Farm - NJ 50 05).

In most of those which have been opened a cist about 4 or 4 1/2ft long by 2ft broad was found. Parts of an urn of burnt clay were found in one cist.

J Stuart 1855.
