Newton Station [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1989.

This intermediate station on the Motherwell-Glasgow portion of the West Coast Main Line was also the junction station for the local branch network. It was opened (by the Clydesdale Junction Rly) on 1 June 1849, on a site 605m W of the present buildings. The original station closed on 19 December 1873, being immediately superseded by the present station. The station later passed to the Caledonian Rly and subsequently to the London Midland and Scottish Rly; it remains in regular use by passenger traffic.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 9 January 2005.
