Archaeology Notes

NJ81NW 132 8167 2889 to 8180 2881

Traces of rig-and-furrow are visible in woodland on the SE side of the policies of Meldrum House Hotel (NJ82NW 13). The rigs measure about 4m in breadth and are aligned roughly E and W.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 14 April 1999.

Activities

Project (22 September 2020 - 6 October 2020)

A series of small blocks within the Meldrum house estate are being developed for housing. Evaluation of four areas did not reveal any archaeological features or finds. A trench across the yard in front of the 19th-century kennels showed that a water-filled feature on the 1867 OS map had been a bitumen-lined pool, presumably for the dogs. Fieldwalking was undertaken in woods around the development. Well-preserved rig and furrow was recorded on the SE perimeter of the estate (NJ 81670 28890), pre-dating the woodland which is shown on a 1780 estate plan.

Field Visit (22 September 2020)

NJ 81390 28736 to NJ 81454 28775 A significant area of rig and furrow was recorded with at least 17 rigs identified and plotted. The rigs extended SE/NW at right angles to road. Centres 7- 8m apart. Maximum height c. 500mm. They can be traced for c. 40m from the road. There appears to be a natural (?) gully running roughly parallel to the rigs.
