Archaeology Notes

NJ62NW 161 6089 2825

For boundary stones at NJ 6170 2821, NJ 6142 2807 and NJ 6096 2815, see NJ62NW 158, NJ62NW 159, NJ62NW 160 respectively.

This granite boundary stone was not located on the date of visit. It is shown at the junction of two field walls on the W flank of the Hill of Dunnideer on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet xliv). The stone was omitted from the 2nd edition of the map (1901, sheet xliv.NW), however, suggesting that it was removed before the end of the 19th century.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 25 May 1999.

This site, and others on Dunnideer Hill, was affected by a fire that spread across the grass and exposed archaeological features, including pottery and other materials. Historic Scotland funded a project to assess the damage the fire did to the upstanding archaeology, and any remains exposed by it or the fire brigade's work (they stripped turf in an attempt to contain the spreading fire).
