Archaeology Notes

NS76NE 41 NS 7871 6595

A coal pit, situated to the S of a minor watercourse feeding into the North Calder Water, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1864, sheet viii) but by the 2nd edition of the same map (1899) it is shown as a water-filled hollow. A number of spoil heaps are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1982), possibly associated with the coal mine - or quarrying.
