Archaeology Notes

NJ26NW 17 c. 230 658

A flat bronze axe (Coles' type Bb) and a flanged bronze axe (Coles' type I), both found near Spynie Castle (Spynie Palace: NJ26NW 10, at NJ 230 658) are in Elgin Museum (Acc Nos: 1868.8 and 1875.3 respectively).

116. (Flat axe of Migdale type). Flat axe, corroded, green patina, tinned, butt and cutting edge sharp; length 126mm, butt 30mm, cutting edge 70mm, weight 330 gms - Elgin Mus. (1868.8).

360. (Flat axe of Bandon type). Flat axe, slightly corroded, partly green patina, butt hammered in modern times; length 95mm, butt 26mm, cutting edge 53mm, weight 180 gms - Elgin Mus. (1875.3).
