Publication Account (2009)
The Institute (1906) was designed by R Rowand Anderson, who had recently redesigned the parish church (fig 5.57; McKinstry 1991, 151–2; Spalding 1994, 28; Williamson et al 1990, 592). This was probably more than a coincidence, as the Institute was to be administered by the church. Erected in William Pearce’s memory by his family and friends, the Institute provided the working population with reading rooms and clubs, a library, a gymnasium, retiring rooms, and cooking and laundry departments. With similar functions today, it also houses offices used by the minister of Govan Old, such that the church is integral to the Institute (Mitchell 2006).
