The estate was bought by a Mr W G Macbeth c. 1919 from the Dundas family who had bought the estate in the 1820's from the heir of the 1st Viscount Melville, who had bought the estate in 1784.
In 1920 Macbeth commissioned the garden designer Thomas Mawson to design new gardens around the house, these terrace gardens were built between 1920 and 1922. Some of the terraces had been created as part of the mid C19th house by Willliam Burn, Mawson added the balustrading, the canal with fountain and steps leading down to the round pond. The garden is illustrated in Country Life, March 21st, 1931.
