(NJ 2508 3060) Auchindown's Cairn (NR)
OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1905)
A small knoll, partly destroyed in the flood of 1829, called Lord Auchindown's cairn, marks the spot where Sir Patrick Gordon of Auchidown is said to have died after the battle of Glenlivet (NJ22NW 3) in 1594.
NSA 1845.
Auchindown's Cairn is now completely covered by stone clearance so that its original size and shape cannot be ascertained. It now measures 5.0m in diameter and 1.2m high and its position was pointed out by the farmer's wife at Achmore. The name and tradition are still known locally.
Revised at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (N K B) 25 August 1966.
