Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Fieldwork in 1971 by the Ordnance Survey identified evidence of past cultivation on the south-western slopes of Cairn Guish. In places, the surveyors noted that a thick layer of peat and heather covered the remains, but where the peat had been weathered away, a series of small fields, measuring about 20m by 15m, were recorded. The edges of each field were largely defined by heaps of stone, cleared from the land during ploughing.

Archaeology Notes

NJ23NW 8 222 366.

Centred at NJ 222 366, on a SW-facing slope, is a field system marked by stone clearance heaps and occasional lynchets. The system is mainly covered by deep peat and heather but where weathering has stripped the peat, plots varying from about 20.0m by 15.0m to about 30.0m by 20.0m can be identified.

No huts were found.

Visited by OS (R L) 12 March 1971.
