Bank of Scotland, 1-3 Bridge Street, 1857, John Burnet Sr
This bank, the first of Burnet's six in Glasgow, occupies a larger footprint than the Baird pavilion it replaced. Figures, rare on buildings of this date, support the coat of arms high above the corner entrance of the Italianate bank. The cornucopias are symbolic of the Edinburgh institution's aspirations, which were accomplished by the Laurieston Agent. His rapid growth of their west of Scotland business in trade, manufacturing and shipping made this their most important lending branch in Scotland.
