Archaeology Notes

HY21NE 36 2792 1961.

(HY 2792 1961) Tumulus {NR}

O.S.6"map, Orkney, 2nd ed.,(1903).

The remains of a large mound, some 105 ft in diameter and once probably about 5 ft high, lie about 300 yds NE of the farmhouse of Hackland. The road from Dounby to the Bay of Skaill cuts through the centre but no internal structure can be seen.

RCAHMS 1946.

The mound is as described by the Commission. It is composed mainly of earth and is probably only the N. part of a natural ridge, cut off by a ditch.

Its profile is accentuated by spoil from the road-cutting.

Visited by OS(RL) 15 May 1967.
