Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

Carnbee Farm, Fife, cross-slab fragment

Measurements: H

Stone type:

Place of discovery: NO 5284 0667

Present location: built into the interior face of an outhouse wall at Carnbee Farm.

Evidence for discovery: first noted by Ian Fisher and photographed by Tom Gray in June 2004.

Present condition: trimmed for re-use and damaged surface.

Description

This is the central portion of a cross-slab carved in relief with the lower part of a circular cross-head and the upper part of a shaft. The slab was bordered by a plain roll moulding and appears to have had parallel vertical sides. Within a circle of roll moulding the cross appears to be of Maltese design, the arms formed by triquetra knots. The shaft is outlined by a roll moulding and contains interlace, and it is flanked on either side by panels of running scroll interlace.

Date: eighth or ninth century.

References: none.
