Railway viaduct, built c. 1896 for the Lanarkshire and Dumbarton shire Rly. A 5-span lattice girder viaduct on stone piers, over the River Kelvin. The girders have been removed since closure in 1966, but the piers are intact.
J R Hume 1974.
Only the two piers now apparently remain of this bridge or viaduct, which formerly spanned the River Kelvin a short distance downstream from the weir NS56NE 1224.01. Neither the viaduct nor its piers is indicated on the 1971 edition of the OS 1:1250 map.
The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Glasgow (to the E) and Govan (to the W).
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 21 December 2005.
Vertical air photography has recorded a substantial deck-type railway bridge a short distance below the weir NS56NE 1224.01. It apparently carried a works siding into the paper mill NS56NE 1224.00. The structure was built on a curve and supported by three piers (apparently of masonry construction) set in the river. Its limited width suggests that it carried a single line of track; this had been removed by the date of imagery.
(Vertical air imagery: 58/RAF/3752 V 0040-1, flown 12 August 1960).
