Archaeology Notes

(NJ 1750 6846) St Lawrence's Well (NR) (Chalybeate)

OS 6" map, Morayshire, 2nd ed. (1906).

This well is shown as an open circle at the site. It would therefore now appear to be inside, close to the SW corner of the enclosure which is subsequent to this survey.

OS 25" map, Morayshire (1870).

There was a chapel in the Church of St. Peter (13th century) (NJ16NE 2) called the 'Chapel of St Laurence'. The old well of St Laurence is in the field in front of Duffus House.

H B Mackintosh 1924.

There are two wells at this site. The one at NJ 1750 6846, probably St Lawrence's Well, is of irregular shape, measuring c.5.4 X 3.2m and contains water to a depth of 0.9m. Some stonework can be seen at the SW corner and a few rotted posts protruding along the south side are all that remains of the structure which enclosed the wells c. 1905. The other well, at NJ 1751 6846, is rectangular measuring 2.3m x 1.2m and holds water to a depth of 0.8m. It is well-constructed of stone.

Visited by OS (R D L), 28 November 1962.
