Archaeology Notes

NJ16NE 20 c. 17 66.

At Unthank it is thought there was a Culdee Chapel connected with St. Aethans, Burghead. There was also a chapel there in the 13th century.

H B Mackintosh 1924.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was founded before 1222 AD. and stood on the farm of Unthank to the south west of Duffus Castle (NJ16NE 4) and for its private use.

W D Simpson 1951.

Unthank hamlet bore the name of College. At this place the foundations of the chapel were lately taken up to repair the mill.

Anon. 1798.

No definite information was encountered though Mr Geddes of Easter Unthank said that rubble was sometimes turned up in ploughing near the cross roads in the field centred at NJ 1764 6720, while Mr Reid of Wester Unthank said there had been an old mill (Anon. 1798) in the area centred NJ 1679 6701
