Archaeology Notes

NJ15NW 6.02 14226 57580

(NJ 1422 5757) The ruins of the Prior's Lodge or Prior's House, with extensive vaults, lie a few yards SE of the Priory building. It seems to have been built early in the 16th century, though MacGibbon and Ross state that while the ruins show the house to have been extensive, there are no features to give a clue to its date.

P F Anson 1959; D MacGibbon and T Ross 1896-7.

The ruins of the Prior's Lodging, built against the south precinct wall, and previously connected to the mainbuilding are as described by Anson (except that there is now no trace of the "extensive vaults") (P F Anson 1959) and planned (Friends of Pluscarden nd.)

A stone-lined water course beneath the building running from west to east is a mill lade (See NJ15NW 1.3). According to Father Edmund, Dr W D Simpson puts the date of the building at the end of the 15th century. MacPhail (S R MacPhail nd.) states that when the Priory was a lay property after the Refomation the farmer of the Priory lands hereabouts was known as the Prior and his dwelling as the 'Prior's Lodging'. Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (N K B) 6 October 1965; Friends of Pluscarden nd.; S R MacPhail nd.
