OS 6"map, Morayshire, 2nd ed., (1904)

Cairns of stones a few feet high at centre and about 20' in diameter. 'In the centre of some, it is said a large standing stone was found. It seems these mounds as yet have not been explored below the surface'. Name Book 1870.

The area, centred NJ 195 432, in which these alleged cairns occur is now re-afforested but sufficient survive to show that they are stone clearance heaps of the type usually associated with hut circles.

Visited by OS (A A) 4 March 1971.

Activities

Field Visit (24 September 1943)

Cairns, Cardow.

The stretch of pinewood and reclaimed moorland between Knowehillock and Gateside, NE of Cardow Distillery, is plentifully scattered with small cairns up to 25 ft . in diameter . But nothing was known by a local resident of the name 'Bonfire Cairn' that appears on the 6 inch OS map. The stone circle has been completely destroyed.

Visited by RCAHMS (AG) 24 September 1943.
