The site of Pumpherston shale-oil works is situated immediately to the W of three large shale bings (NT06NE 29) in an area now occupied by a small modern industrial estate. The works are depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire, [New series], sheet V NE, 1895). The map shows the layout of the works including the filter beds in the late 19th century.
