Archaeology Notes

NT26SW 70 centred 2367 6158

There are few extant remains of Mauricewood colliery which was situated on sloping ground some 350m SE of Mauricewood house (NT26SW 67.00). The colliery is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (Midlothian, 1896), on the W side of the public road to Mauricewood Mains. Several buildings are shown along with a shaft and two 'old shafts' . In addition, two large spoil heaps with a set of filter beds are also depicted. The coal mine was connected by an inclined railway to a further spoil heap, a coal depot with railway sidings and subsequently to the Glencorse extension of the Roslin branch railway. The course of the inclined railway is now covered by modern housing.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) April 2000.
