Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sources describe a church or chapel which once stood on the west bank of the River Avon, about 250m south-east of Chapelton steading. The Old Statistical Account of 1794 suggested that at that date several burials were still evident, some of which were marked with headstones.

The remains of the chapel measure about 11.5m by 4m and are defined by grass-covered foundations. Traces of a possible enclosing wall have been traced to the north-east. About 30m to the north-west is a well, fed by a nearby spring, and enclosed by a rough masonry wall. There are no obvious surviving traces of any graves.

Chapel Well (NR).

OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1905)

Foundations of a chapel and traces of graves, at Chapelton of Kilnmaichlie. Adjoining is a spring called Chapel Well.

New Statistical Account (NSA, written by Rev W Asher) 1845; Name Book 1869.

The grass-covered foundations of a building were located in a coppice close by a stream. The footings, which protrude through a grassy bank, 3.0m wide and 0.6m high, give a measurement for the building of c.11.5m x 4.0m, with orientation NE/SW. At the NE side, there are vague traces of a grass-covered wall, which may have been the remains of an annexe or part of a graveyard wall. No trace of gravestones was found in the vicinity of the building. Some 30.0m NW of the building there is a well, partly covered and enclosed by rough masonry, which itself is 7.0m NW of the point where the natural spring issues. Nothing is known locally concerning the dedication of the chapel.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (R B) 31 August 1966.
