Archaeology Notes

NX59SE 48 5728 9075

NX 570 908 (centre) An area of 1000 acres surrounding Braidenoch Hill was inspected and numerous previously unrecorded sites were located.

A full report has been lodged with the NMRS.

T Ward 1998

Three sheepfolds, on the upper SE-facing slopes of Braidenoch Hill, were noted during a pre-afforestation survey. Two are turf-built with a significant stone content in their banks. Both are overlain by a larger, rectangular drystone-walled sheepfold. The better-preserved of the turf-built folds measures 8m from E to W and is open-ended on the E. It is situated in the SW corner of the stone-built fold. The second turf-built fold is longer and narrower and aligned from N to S.

The rectangular sheepfold is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Kirkcudbrightshire 1853, sheet 9) and shown on the current edition of the OS 6-inch map (1980).
