Archaeology Notes

NO42NE 121 458 277

NO 458 277 An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed extension of Scotscraig Golf Course located within an Archaeological Area of Regional Importance as defined in the Fife Structure Plan. This was achieved through a programme of desk-based assessment and trial trenching of a 3% (300m2) sample area.

The results indicated that the archaeological potential of the proposed development area was low. A single drainage feature and two possible coarse stone tools were found. Modern pottery and glass were recovered from the topsoil. Rich organic deposits relating to the Early Holocene environment were found at a depth of 1.5m and underlying thick deposits of carse clay.

A detailed report has been lodged with the NMRS.

NO 458 277 The report on the site above states that the excavation found very little evidence for pre-modern activity in the proposed development site. However, two possible coarse stone tools may show activity of greater antiquity in the area. The report suggests that no further archaeological work is required on this site unless the proposed development involved deep excavation, which will disturb the organic remains.
