Archaeology Notes

(NJ 0453 5938) Little Cross (NR) (Remains of)

"The Little Cross of Forres. The site of this cross is at the east end of Forres and may have been a burgh boundary site. Nothing now remains of the Little Cross except the base which was found buried near where it now lies at the junction of the Findhorn and Elgin-Forres Roads. The stone base is square each side measuring about two feet, tapering somewhat as it reaches the top where it is 18 inches on each side. The cavity in the base where the pillar must have rested is square, each side being a foot in length. Hollows are evident in each side of the stone, probably associated with some method of fixture." The cross is mentioned as being in existence in 1591. (In the illustration the stone seems to lie beside a wooden structure, possibly part of a fence.)

L Shaw 1882; R Douglas 1936

Not to be seen here and not known locally.

Information from O G S Crawford 5 May 1943

There is no sign of Little Cross at its published position and no information can be obtained as to what has become of it. The area has recently been subjected to road improvements, and the cross base, as described and illustrated by Douglas, has been moved to the west end of a private garden at NJ 0458 5939.

Visited by OS (RDL) 18 September 1963.
