A milestone from the Aberdeen-Inverurie canal [Aberdeenshire Canal Navigation] now stands at Kirkton steading (NJ81SW 105). It is marked 12 1/2 miles from Aberdeen.

NMRS, MS/712/92.

This canal milestone, which originally stood about 800m NNW of Kirkton farmsteading (NJ81SW 105), now forms the centrepiece of a rockery in the garden immediately W of the farmhouse there. The granite marker has been sunk into the ground and only the upper 0.65m of the stone is now visible, though even this is largely obscured by the presence of an adjacent young leylandii. The stone measures about 0.3m in diameter and the domed top bears an angled facet on which is incised the number 12½, the distance between the point where the milestone originally stood and the end of the canal in Aberdeen.
