Sir Basil Spence

Building Notes

In the mid 1960s Sir Basil Spence designed a weekend home for Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, the 14th Duke of Hamilton. It was intended for a site at Avon Braes, just outside the town of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire. A pair of two-storey staff cottages and a garage, linked to the main house by the kitchen in the west wing, was also included in the scheme. The house was never built.

Archive Details and Summary

The Sir Basil Spence Archive holds ten mounted photographs for the project showing views of the architect’s model. There are also five drawings, which include plans and elevations of the proposed design.

The Spence Glover and Ferguson Collection, also held at RCAHMS, holds a further four photographs of the model and 15 drawings. These include plans and elevations for the house and staff cottages, along with a site plan showing the difference in ground levels. There is also a colour perspective showing the proposed entrance front, which is signed by Spence with the date January 1964.
